REGISTRATION OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Registration of postgraduate students takes place through the University of Crete's electronic system, the student directory system: eduportal
The Postgraduate Student Secretariat informs postgraduate students about the deadline for registration. Each student submits a registration form signed by him/her and his/her academic advisor, which includes the courses to be attended per semester and the preparation of the postgraduate thesis.
The monitoring of the studies of postgraduate students from registration to graduation is done electronically through the student record system, in which the registration of teaching assignments, the creation of classes, course declarations, the entry of grades, the issue of certificates and attestations of all kinds and finally the issue of the degrees. Students receive passwords to the system on their first registration and through the eduportal subsystem they can register their courses, view their grades and apply for certificates and diplomas. At the beginning of each academic year, the Secretariat will provide the students with a list of their certificates, certificates and certificates. At the beginning of each semester, the Secretariat creates the new classes in the system, designating the teachers and generally everything that is required for each course. At a specific time set in parallel with the start of the courses, the system is opened in order for students to make their declarations. When the system is closed, the registrations are managed by the Secretariat and at the same time the teachers can view their classes and their students so that they can then enter their grades.
INTERRUPTION OF STUDIES
The minimum duration for the award of the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies is four (4) semesters during which the candidate is enrolled in the MSc. The duration may be extended by one (1) or two (2) semesters with the approval of the Departmental Assembly. Between these semesters, other activities, such as internships in industry or in other universities and research centres, may be interspersed with a break in studies for a total duration of up to two (2) semesters, subject to the approval of the Assembly. Before the beginning of the academic semester, the student usually submits the relevant form/request for interruption of studies to the Secretariat explaining the reasons for the request and the semesters during which he/she wishes to interrupt his/her studies. After the Secretariat has checked the application and found that the student is formally entitled to interruption of studies and has not exceeded the maximum number of semesters of interruption, the application is forwarded to the next meeting of the Departmental Assembly which decides on the interruption. The Secretariat then informs the student of the result and proceeds to update the student record.
EXTENSION OF STUDIES
The minimum duration for the award of the Diploma of Postgraduate Studies is four (4) semesters during which the candidate is enrolled in the MSc. The duration may be extended by one (1) or two (2) semesters with the approval of the Departmental Assembly.
SPECIAL REGISTRATION
The duration for the award of the MSc, including any extension, cannot exceed six (6) semesters. Postgraduate students who have completed the maximum duration of study may apply to the Secretariat for a special registration of one month in order to complete and present their Master's thesis.
ACADEMIC IDENTITYAll students can obtain the new academic identity card through the Electronic Academic Identity Service of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
The application is made online at http://academicid.minedu.gov.gr/.
In case of loss/theft of the ID card, you will have to report it to the Police, and then, with the loss report certificate you will get from them, you will request the reissue of the ID card from our Registrar's Office.
COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE UC BY E-MAIL
Every student of the Department has an e-mail address at csd.uoc.gr. This address is given to the students upon their registration in the Department by the system managers of the Department.
By the decision of the Senate of 4/7/2013, the exclusive use of this address is now required for the communication of students with the Secretariat and all other services of the Institution.
TEACHING ASSISTANT WORK
At the beginning of each academic semester, the Postgraduate Studies Secretariat, after taking into account the opinion of the teaching professors and the Postgraduate Studies Committee, assigns all postgraduate students to assist in a specific course.
Teaching assistantships include all individual tasks (usually supervision of laboratories, occasional tutorials, and so on) in the context of coursework, examinations, and all educational procedures. Teaching assistantships are compulsory in all semesters of the MSc during which the student is enrolled in the MSc.
At the end of each academic semester, postgraduate students are required to submit to the Postgraduate Studies Secretariat the evaluation form for their teaching assistantship. The form is completed and signed by the instructor of the course in which the student provided ancillary teaching work, the student takes note of the evaluation, signs the form and submits it to the secretariat.
PREPARATION OF POSTGRADUATE THESIS
The procedure for the declaration and preparation of a postgraduate thesis, as described in the Regulations of the Postgraduate Studies Programme, is as follows: Students who meet the requirements, according to the Guide to Studies, for starting a Master's thesis choose a topic and a professor who will supervise it. The postgraduate thesis may be of a research or developmental nature. The Master's thesis is carried out under the supervision and guidance of the supervisor. The direct supervision and guidance of the thesis may be entrusted to a third person, a holder of a doctoral degree, not a faculty member of the Department, but the supervisor remains responsible for the progress of the thesis. The appointment of the supervisor and the topic of the thesis is made at the beginning of the second year of the postgraduate student's studies by decision of the Department Assembly, which takes into account the proposal of the Postgraduate Studies Committee and the application of the postgraduate student, which is co-signed by the supervisor.
COURSE RECOGNITION
The ECTS credits required for the MSc come mainly from postgraduate courses of the Department, in which the candidate is enrolled and which he/she has successfully completed while enrolled in the MSc. However, it is possible, upon request of the student concerned and recommendation of the Graduate Studies Coordinating Committee, for the Department to recognise (and determine the equivalent weight in ECTS) certain postgraduate or advanced undergraduate courses taken at an HEI during the undergraduate or postgraduate studies for the fulfilment of the requirements of the MSc.
For these credits the basic rule is that double use of a course, i.e. using the same course to fulfil the requirements of more than one (undergraduate or postgraduate) qualification, is not allowed. More specifically, for a course to be recognised, it must be in addition to the requirements for the (undergraduate or postgraduate) qualification under which the course was taken. In addition, the following restrictions apply:
1. A maximum of 24 ECTS can be recognised, which can come from postgraduate or advanced undergraduate courses. Of the 12 ECTS in each area of specialisation, 6 ECTS can be covered by credits and the rest must be from courses in the area which the candidate will successfully complete during the MSc.
2. Applications for credit for courses of all categories must be made in the first semester of the MSc.
The Secretariat forwards the requests for recognition, completing a relevant form/practice and all supporting documents to the Course Recognition Committee, which recommends to the Departmental Assembly the recognition or not of the requested courses.
The Committee shall ensure that the grade and credit points are assigned to the Department's scale. The Committee reserves the possibility of changing the prerequisite courses and time experience that may be required for recognition of the course/lab/work listed on the student's application. The committee, or a member of the committee, or the instructors of relevant courses in the PC may interview the student concerned in order to ascertain more accurately issues relevant to the recognition.
MOBILITY OF POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS
Postgraduate students of the Department who wish to move through the Erasmus programme to other partner universities abroad and who meet the requirements set by the Department, should first contact the International Relations Office of the University.
The Erasmus+ Programme is the new programme of the European Commission which, among other things, concerns the mobility of students to universities abroad for studies and internships. At the University of Crete, the Erasmus+ Programme is supported by the Department of International & Public Relations. Postgraduate students should contact this department for all information regarding procedures (applications, partner institutions).
Applications for Erasmus+ mobility are usually made in February of the academic year preceding the mobility. The deadline for submitting applications, which is common for both study and placement mobility, is published on the website of the Department of Public Relations.
For academic matters (such as selection of the Host Department, selection of courses to follow, etc.), the Erasmus+ Programme in our Department is managed by the Student Mobility Committee. For general information, postgraduate students can also contact the Department's Secretariat. The basic rules for the mobility of postgraduate students of the Department are:
General rules
- Any postgraduate student wishing to move through Erasmus+ should apply to the Department stating the exact purpose of the move, i.e. which courses he/she wishes to follow and/or what research project he/she intends to carry out.
- In order to move a postgraduate student must:
- his/her application must have the agreement of his/her supervisor or academic advisor.
- have a proven basic knowledge of the language in which the courses are taught at the host institution.
- There must have been no irregularities/irregularities during his/her studies which have been brought to the attention of the GC.
- No transfers are allowed in the first semester of postgraduate studies on the grounds that this is a semester of adaptation to the programme.
- A postgraduate student may move a maximum of one (1) semester with Erasmus+ during his/her Master's studies.
Procedure
- All applicants apply by a deadline (two in each year, one for each semester).
- The Graduate Secretariat will determine whether applications comply with the above rules.
- The evaluation of the applicants is done by the Erasmus Committee of the Department based on academic criteria (course grades, publications, awards, etc.). In case of a tie based on academic criteria, priority is given to those who have not already moved for an internship.
- The Erasmus Committee's ranking is given to the EMC which finally decides.
Rules for identification
Courses that have been successfully completed at the Host Institution will be reviewed by a competent committee consisting of 1. the ERASMUS Program Coordinator as a rapporteur and 2. three faculty members of the department. Specifically:
Courses that have been successfully examined at the host institution and are on the course list of the agreement signed by the student with the sending institution will be recognized by the competent committee taking into account a) the recommendations of faculty members who had collaborated in the preparation of the course list before the student's transfer, as well as b) the directly measured course workload (hours of theory/lab, level of difficulty, type of examination, etc.). It is stressed that the number of ECTS credits assigned to each of the above courses by the host institution are transferred to the sending institution without alteration or conversion.
The Master's thesis or internship which was partially successfully completed at the Host institution shall be presented by the sending institution and only after the agreement of the supervisor appointed at the sending institution.
