Computer networks, mobile computing, and telecommunications
Description
The goal of this course is the theoretical presentation of basic network technology (both traditional networks and integrated service digital networks), an introduction to integrated network design, and acquiring experience through related laboratory exercises with commercial switching and routing hardware as well as simulators. The course content covers: Review of basic principles in communication networks and modern trends. Ethernet, switched Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, routing at the IP level, voice-over-IP. Network management and programming in a network environment: programming with sockets in UNIX and Windows or client-server model, SNMP, modern techniques (CORBA). Synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH). The basics regarding Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Combination of IP and ATM technologies: classical IP-over-ATM, LAN emulation. Related laboratory exercises. Integrated network design based on the above: requirements, choice of technology, topology and configuration, management, etc. Design project using a simulator.
The courses of the Computer Science Department are designated with the letters "CS" followed by three decimal digits. The first digit denotes the year of study during which students are expected to enroll in the course.
