The Speech Processing Courses in Crete (SPCC) are targeting to teach graduate students and researchers the latest advancements of speech processing covering theory, hands on, and
establishing contacts between the academics and industry. The school will provide the chance to students and professionals to meet world leaders in speech technology, exchanging ideas,
sharing experiences and vision.
The school strongly supports the hands-on sessions to provide to the participants a good balance between theory and practice.
Morning sessions will include lectures on theory while all afternoon sessions will be dedicated solely to the hands-on sessions.
The Summer School is organized by the University of Crete, Greece. It is sponsored by the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA), Google, and Apple. We thank our sponsors for their support.
For 2020, the school topic is: Neural approaches for speech enhancement, synthesis, and coding
The topic includes:- Basic components of neural vocoders: Wavenet, Parallel Wavenet, and WaveRNN
- Deep generative models for speech compression
- Neural auto-regressive, source-filter and glottal vocoders for speech and music signals
- Neural vocoders for coding, synthesis, and enhancement

- 24-4-2020: Important: Many of you have asked us whether the SPCC2020 will actually take place this July due to the Covid19 pandemic.
We should first note that the SPCC team is closely following the latest developments regarding safety regulations against the novel coronavirus. Moreover, it should be stressed that Crete - and Greece in general - is one of the most safe places in Europe (until now): it has been struck by the virus much less compared to most European countries and regions.
A definitive decision regarding SPCC2020 will be taken in the first week of June.
Here are the options we are considering:- 1. Given that quarantine measures will cease, SPCC2020 will kick-off as planned, on the 27th of July. In case some of you cannot attend due to flight restrictions, there is a possibility of live-streaming the event.
- 2. If we are still in quarantine, we can deliver lectures and hands-on sessions using a platform like Zoom (for example). Some changes in the school programme might be necessary to compensate time zone differences.
- 3. Finally, the event may be postponed for September, but that might be our last option.
