Course Description
Introduction to Computer Science provides students with a broad foundation in the fundamental concepts, principles, and practices of computer science. The course introduces students to computational thinking, problem-solving, algorithms, programming, data representation, computer organization, operating systems, networks, databases, and the broader role of computing in society. Through lectures, practical exercises, and problem-solving tasks, students will develop an understanding of the major areas of computer science and their interconnections. The course also considers contemporary issues such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data privacy, ethics, and the social impact of computing. The course is designed for students with little or no prior experience in computer science or programming.
Prerequisite
None
Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Explain fundamental concepts of computer science, including computation, algorithms, programming, data, hardware, software, and computer systems.
- Describe the basic organization of computer systems, including processors, memory, storage, input/output devices, and the interaction between hardware and software.
- Explain fundamental concepts of operating systems and computer networks, including processes, files, communication, networking, and Internet technologies.
- Recognize the role of databases and data management in modern computing and understand basic concepts such as data organization, querying, and information retrieval.
- Describe major areas and applications of computer science, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science, software engineering, and human-computer interaction.
- Discuss ethical, social, and societal issues related to computing, including privacy, security, intellectual property, accessibility, algorithmic decision-making, and the responsible use of technology.
